Leaving Las Vegas?

A couple of you have written in response to a Las Vegas Review-Journal story in which 51s owner Don Logan says he half expects the Dodgers to end their player-development agreement with his club. I looked into this matter this morning, and while I have very little concrete information, it sounds like there isn’t a lot of there there. Major League Baseball strictly prohibits clubs from talking about PD agreements while they’re still pending, so it was like getting water of a rock. But it SOUNDS like Don Logan was only trying to light a fire under the Dodgers, trying to get them to hurry up and renew the agreement, which is about to expire. But I’m guessing this relationship is too beneficial to both sides for it to fall apart — certainly much more beneficial to the Dodgers than Albuquerque would be, which is where Logan implied the Dodgers are likely headed. The sticking point APPEARS to be the Vegas facility, which I believe is the oldest in the PCL. Having gone there a couple of years ago, I can vouch for the fact it’s a tad inadequate. Logan implies in the story that the Dodgers want a better Triple-A facility, which they can get in Albuquerque. Logan also might be trying to pressure the Dodgers into helping fund a stadium or an upgrade to Cashman Field, something they;re not willing to do at this point. … Not sure if this was reported yet, but Greg Maddux has been pushed back one day in the rotation and will now pitch on Monday at San Diego instead of Sunday against Randy Johnson in Arizona. Clayton Kershaw gets that game. In a strange way, this signifies a generational changing of the guard in baseball. Biggest series of the year, and the future Hall of Famer with 354 wins gets pushed out to make room for the highly touted 20-year-old with three career wins. But if you have watched these two guys pitch lately, this isn’t exactly a reach.
