Jason Repko avoids arbitration, signs one-year deal

Smart move on his part, as it wouldn’t have been in his best interest to take the club to a hearing considering he had a whopping 20 plate appearances in the big leagues last season. He gets a very modest raise of $12,500 in base salary, which is now $500k, which I believe he gets whether he is in the majors or the minors. There are also some plate-appearance bonuses that max out at $87,500 or $90,000 depending on which report you believe. I’m trying to run that down now. The other three eligibles, Broxton, Martin and Ethier, exchange arbitration numbers with the club tomorrow if they don’t sign today.

This might have been posted under “Anonymous”. Not sure.

I’m guessing that at least partly, Repko’s chance to open the season with the Dodgers is dependent on the performance of Xavier Paul during the spring. The later had a solid 2008 at LV, has speed, is a good outfielder, and like Repko has a very strong arm. It could also come down to a lefty-righty thing, since I believe Paul hits from the left side.

BD, it also could come down to options. I can’t for the life of me remember whether Repko has one left or not, but he has been in the organization since 1999, so it’s possible his have been used up. I’m trying to run that down, along with the incentives. Since Delwyn Young also is out of options, this probably means one of them will have to be moved if the Dodgers re-sign Manny. Or, since DY can play some 2B, maybe they just carry six OFs. At any rate, it would appear the odds are stacked heavily against the X-man, as he still has a couple of options left.

    Tony,

You’re absolutely correct. Not only did I forget about options, but I also forgot about DY. Of course, lots can happen twixt now and opening day (or even a little thereafter). Besides, I haven’t seen enough of the “X-man” to have a firm opinion on his abilities. I also need to do a better job proof-reading my posts, having misspelled “latter” as “later”.

    Tony,

I guess forgetting can become ingrained. Not only did I forget options and DY, but it also occurs to me that I forgot Juan Pierre. Any news on whether or not he could be moved before opening day?
