James McDonald with a scoreless outing

James McDonald pitched three scoreless innings against the Rockies, bouncing back after an erratic start to finish with a nice stat line: 3.0 innings, 2 H, 2 BBs, 1 HBP, 0 runs, 3 Ks

Scott Elbert is in here in the fourth inning with the Dodgers leading 5-0. The big blows came off the bats of Blake DeWitt and Xavier Paul in the top of the third. DeWitt plated two runs with a double to right field, XPaul picked up the other three with a triple to right.

The 5th starter race is officially over. Your winner: James McDonald! Congrats, Big Game James!

That’s good news. The more good news about our pitching we get, the better.
Because we haven’t had enough of that.
Especially when it comes to a 5th starter.

Maybe they can limit his innings by having him start every fifth day for April then send him down when Schmidt is healthy and have him on a longer start cycle, like 7 days or 5 days and skip a start every month. Then if Schmidt doesn’t work out we’ll have McD for the playoff push.

GScott, I question the use of “if” in your final sentence.

In all fairness, Schmidt can still be very good if he gets to where his body can rebound and he can trust himself not to break.
