THE BARE ESSENTIALS:
The Dodgers ran into a buzz saw tonight in Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, who gave up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts in eight impressive innings.
Ken Griffrey Jr. hit a two-run home run in the third inning off Dodgers starter Eric Milton. It was Griffey’s 620th career home run.
The Dodgers scored their only run in the third inning, and it was unearned when Rafael Furcal scored from third on a fielding error by Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki.
Milton wasn’t terrible, striking out seven over five innings while giving up four runs, but on a night when Hernandez was as dominant as he was it would have taken a perfect effort from Milton to win.
Eh, sometimes you just have to tip your cap and move on to the next game. With Felix Hernandez dealing the way he was, it was an uphill battle from the get-go for the Dodgers.
To make room for Milton on the 25-man roster, the Dodgers optioned right-hander Cory Wade to Triple-A Albuquerque.
The Dodgers go for the series win Sunday at 1:10 p.m., sending RHP Hiroki Kuroda (2-3, 3.44) against LHP Garrett Olson (2-2, 4.95)
Manny Ramirez, batting leadoff for the Inland Empire 66ers, hit a home run on his first swing against Lake Elsinore pitcher Nick Schmidt.
Manny is scheduled to play tonight’s game in Lake Elsinore then play a three-game set in Inland Empire with the 66ers against the visiting Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
CBS’ Jim Hill is reporting that Dodgers RHP Ronald Belisario was arrested this morning in Pasadena under suspicion of DUI. Belisario had been pulled over for using his cell phone between the hours of 2-3 this morning, and was also cited for that. He was released later in the morning. Whether Belisario will be punished by the Dodgers for the incident is unknown.
To quote the report,
“On 6-27-2009 Ronald Belisario was stopped on Fair Oaks Ave just south of Colorado Blvd in Pasadena for talking on his cell phone while driving. An investigation was conducted and Belisario was 0227 hours for suspicion of D.U.I. Belisario was then transported to Pasadena P.D. and booked without further incident.”
