Zack Greinke threw approximately 60 pitches in the Dodgers’ bullpen today and seems to be making progress toward his first rehabilitation assignment. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Greinke touched 90 mph on the radar gun.
“I don’t know how I’d be throwing more than 100 pitches,” Greinke said, “but throwing 50 to 75 should be pretty easy at this point, if that was the case.”
Greinke, who had surgery to repair a fractured left clavicle on April 13, said that he threw all of his pitches and had no problem receiving return throws from his catcher in his left (glove) hand. Even the range of motion in his left arm is becoming less of an issue.
“I feel more than you would, with your normal arm, but it’s not anything major,” Greinke said.
There’s no timetable yet for a rehab assignment, but Mattingly hinted that it could be soon if Greinke feels good tomorrow.
“He’s getting closer,” Mattingly said. “We’ll see how he comes out of that. His next step will be moving toward that.”
Looming large on the schedule as a possible target is a June 3-5 series against the San Diego Padres, a second chance to face the team and the player (Carlos Quentin) who started the brawl in which Greinke suffered the injury. Would he like to be on the mound by then?
“I don’t know when that (series) is, but probably,” Greinke said.
