Shortstop Hanley Ramirez (jammed shoulder) again took ground balls during batting practice and more cuts during live batting practice, and could start as early as tomorrow or as late as Friday.
Mattingly said Ramirez was available to pinch-hit Sunday and was again available Monday night, and all but wrote off the possibility of sending Ramirez to the disabled list.
If there’s still some risk of Ramirez suffering a setback by playing tomorrow, Mattingly said he might wait until Friday to take advantage of an off-day Thursday.
“We’re going to see where he’s at. He’s got to be at a point where he’s not going to hurt himself again,” Mattingly said. “He can’t play just one game if it’s going to cost him seven. If he’s ready to play, he’ll be in there.”
Mattingly said that center fielder Matt Kemp (sprained ankle) was at about 60 to 70 percent, but there are still benchmarks for Kemp to hit in his rehabilitation.
“I’d like to see a little more explosion, and he’s got to be able to stop quickly,” Mattingly said.
