Dodger fans create online petition to bring back paper season tickets.

Dodger Stadium fansChange.org petition has been written to reverse the Dodgers’ paperless season-ticket policy. The petition, which had 173 supporters as of this blogging, states:

It is important because as [season-ticket holders] we are historians of the game. We use our tickets in a variety of ways, some of us to gift clients and family, others as a kind gesture to local non-profits. But, most of us are super fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers and want to know that this new digital only, print at home method the LA Dodgers are declaring as a “benefit” is only a way for the oganization (sic) to throw the cost at the consumers, the season ticket holders. We are asking that the LA Dodgers for this season give us the option of either having our tickets printed and sent to us as the norm, OR be an early adopter for the new digital barcode/print at home method. We understand that digital barcodes are the way of the future, we just want the option this year as this wasn’t declared to us upon renewing our season tickets. Please, give us the option that’s all we want.

Team president Stan Kasten didn’t know the petition existed until he did an interview for this blog entry you’re reading right now.

Is there any chance the Dodgers reverse their paperless season ticket policy?

In a word, no.

“A surprisingly small number of people have called with questions,” Kasten said. “We walk them through the process and that almost always resolves the problem.”

So what does he tell fans who say they want a ticket to keep for perpetuity as a souvenir or memento?

“Well,” Kasten said, “you can print that ticket out and present them at the gate.”

In short, if you want a season ticket printed on paper, buy a printer. The print-at-home method should work.

Kasten allowed for a possible exception to the policy. In case of a game with added significance — a no-hitter, for example — the Dodgers might print tickets to be distributed at a future game as a souvenir giveaway.

How’s that for a glimpse of the future: In a world where baseball teams print tickets after the game has been played …

As of now, it’s a still just an idea.
