The Dodgers will soon learn more about the extent of Chone Figgins‘ strained left quad. Team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache is expected to meet today with Figgins and pitcher Chad Billingsley, who was diagnosed with a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow.
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that an MRI on Figgins’ left quad revealed “a significant strain.” Figgins, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, has noticed improvement since he first suffered the injury Friday.
“When I woke up yesterday, it was hard to pick it up,” he said. “It’s already started to loosen up.”
The 36-year-old infielder said he heard a “pop” in his leg while running out a bunt in the eighth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Coincidentally, that was his first sacrifice hit of the season. Figgins felt well enough to play the top of the ninth inning at third base, but that only left him more frustrated.
“I made plays at short, third, second,” Figgins said. “Something you’re always supposed to do — get the runner over — not the plays when I had to run in and charge … that’s when something like this happens.”
Figgins has a .217/.373/.267 slash line this season with four stolen bases in five attempts. He had appeared in 13 of the last 14 games, starting seven, and making appearances at second base, third base and shortstop.
“That’s the one part that sucks about the whole thing,” he said. “I was starting to feel like myself again.”
The Dodgers recalled Carlos Triunfel from Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday. Figgins’ absence leaves a veteran void on the bench. Jamie Romak (who starts today), Miguel Rojas and Triunfel were all in Triple-A as recently as three weeks ago.
