On the occasion of the Stanley Cup visiting Dodger Stadium Tuesday, here’s something you probably didn’t know: Dodgers third baseman Jamie Romak is the grandson of former professional hockey player George Rebstock.
Romak said that his grandfather was under contract to the Detroit Red Wings at one point, but he never got in a game. His playing career was interrupted by service in World War II. During that time, Romak said that Rebstock played for the Canadian Army team while stationed overseas.
When Rebstock returned, he served as a mentor to several future NHL players in the Red Wings’ minor-league system, including defensemen Jim Ross, Jim Hay and Marcel Pronovost.
