Former Dodgers pitcher Pedro Martinez elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Baseball Hall of Fame called for former Dodgers pitcher Pedro Martinez on Tuesday.

The right-handed pitcher was listed on 91.1 percent of ballots, second only to Randy Johnson. Two others were elected, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio. It’s the first time three pitchers have been inducted to the Hall of Fame in the same year.

Former Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza was listed on 69.9 percent of ballots, short of the 75 percent needed for induction.

Martinez was signed by the Dodgers as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 1988 and developed in the Dodgers’ farm system. Five years later, after his first full season in the major leagues, Martinez was traded to the Montreal Expos for second baseman Delino Deshields. The right-hander won 10 games in a Dodgers uniform and 209 after the trade.

Piazza, a 62nd-round draft pick by the Dodgers in 1988, plied his trade in Los Angeles from 1992-98. He was traded to the Marlins in May 1998 (and eight days later, the New York Mets). He hit 177 home runs as a Dodger and 250 home runs after the trade — the most home runs ever hit by a catcher. His chances for induction figure to improve greatly in 2016, when Ken Griffey Jr. and Trevor Hoffman are the only likely Hall of Famers joining the ballot.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, in his final year on the ballot as a player, was named on 9.1 percent of ballots. Former Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent (14%), first baseman Fred McGriff (12.9%), outfielder Gary Sheffield (11.7%) and shortstop Nomar Garciaparra (5.5%) also fell short of induction but will remain on the ballot.

Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire was named on 55 ballots, 10 percent of the electorate.

Former Dodgers pitcher Jason Schmidt did not receive a vote in his only year of eligibility.

The complete election results are listed on the Baseball Writers Association of America’s website.
