Dodgers spring training 2015: Another tie, Will Ferrell, Clayton Kershaw, Hector Olivera, etc.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Dodgers tied the Colorado Rockies today, 2-2. It was their third tie in their last four Cactus League games. Corey Seager interrupted the streak with a game-winning double in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to beat the Milwaukee Brewers. Otherwise, the Dodgers would be looking at four ties in a row. As I told someone at the ballpark today, I thought I was finished covering hockey.

The box score from today’s game is here. Some postgame thoughts:

• Clayton Kershaw gave a businesslike assessment of his performance. He felt like he was a little sharper in his first spring outing, when he needed only 20 pitches to retire six batters with the efficiency of a German accountant. In three innings today, Kershaw allowed a walk and three hits, including a home run to Nick Hundley on a hanging curveball over the plate. Prior to last year he’d thrown 2,249 curves and allowed one home run, a fact that Rick Monday and Kevin Kennedy pointed out on the TV broadcast. For the best pitcher in the game, it was a rare mistake.

• It’s worth mentioning here that A.J. Ellis caught Kershaw today and Yasmani Grandal caught him five days earlier. That rotation will continue, Don Mattingly said. “Yasmani gets Zack (Greinke) tomorrow. A.J. ends up with (Brett) Anderson. Hopefully it’s getting mixed up in there,” Mattingly said. “You want (Grandal) to be able to catch (Kershaw) out there and those guys be on the same page as they’re working through stuff. It’s something we definitely want to make sure we do.”

Paco Rodriguez really opened some eyes with his three-strikeout eighth inning. The only certainty about the Dodgers bullpen: If your name is J.P. Howell, Brandon League, Kenley Jansen or Joel Peralta, you won’t be shuffling to and from Triple-A Oklahoma City this year. Rodriguez made a statement to have his name included in that group.

• Starting pitchers Hyun-Jin Ryu and James Shields will be on the field for the 6:15 p.m. Thursday game between the Dodgers and Padres. Evidently, so will Will Ferrell. (Spoiler: it’s a made-for-TV publicity stunt under the guise of charity.) For both of you at home wondering why a random midweek spring training game would be pushed back five hours, there’s your answer.

• There was no indication tonight out of Dodgers camp that a contract with Hector Olivera is close; there was no indication that they’re out on him, either. One report today claimed the prized Cuban infielder fired his agents late Monday and replaced them with Greg Genske, who represents Grandal (among others). Another report claimed that Olivera fired his old agent but hadn’t committed to Genske. “It changes every day” is how one executive whose team has been linked to Olivera described it. Under these circumstances, where teams are unsure who they’re negotiating with, it seems hard to believe that Olivera will sign anywhere imminently — say, within the next 24 hours. But that’s just an educated guess.

• Tame Impala released a new single today.
