GLENDALE, Ariz. — Dodgers pitcher Chad Gaudin will undergo an MRI exam after feeling a tingling sensation in his right hand Thursday, manager Don Mattingly said.

Gaudin reported feeling a “tweak” sensation in his right biceps in his last Cactus League start Saturday. But he recovered in the meantime and was scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game Thursday at Camelback Ranch.

“He got all the way to the mound, the bullpen mound, threw a couple and was feeling the same thing,” Mattingly said of Gaudin. “He’s feeling the same feeling he felt before, tingling in his fingers and things like that — enough to stop it. … He said it felt like you hit your funny bone.”

The injury adds to a growing list of ailments that is depleting the Dodgers’ pitching depth. Veteran Erik Bedard was expected to compete with Gaudin for a spot starter’s job, but he has been sidelined with a left triceps injury. The Dodgers will need a spot starter at least twice in April because left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu has inflammation in his left shoulder.

Reliever Brandon League had an MRI on his right shoulder and is expected to begin the season on the disabled list.

Gaudin missed the entire 2014 season because of a neck injury. His symptoms are reminiscent of Josh Beckett, who noticed tingling his fingers prior to a bout with thoracic outlet syndrome. The team can’t diagnose anythingfor sure until it receives the results of the MRI, which Gaudin is expected to take care of tomorrow.

The actual impact of Gaudin’s injury on the Opening Day roster is important, but relatively marginal. Ryu’s injury created the need for a spot starter on April 13 or 14, and the first day the Dodgers can recall a player from the minors is April 15. So the pitcher who starts the April 13/14 game could either be selected from outside the 40-man roster or begin the season on the Opening Day roster, but he cannot be recalled from the minor leagues if he’s already been optioned.

The Dodgers will also need a spot starter to take Ryu’s place April 23 or 24, and possibly April 28 or 29, depending on the duration of Ryu’s rehab.

Gaudin had value as a hybrid starter/reliever, a profile that fits only Carlos Frias among the club’s most major-league ready prospects. Frias, Joe Wieland, Mike Bolsinger and Zach Lee (in some order) are now strong candidates to make the Opening Day roster as the club’s fifth starter.
