Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) resumes playing catch.

Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu played catch from flat ground Tuesday. It’s the first time Ryu has thrown since March, when he was shut down because of inflammation in his left shoulder.

Ryu is on the 15-day disabled list and is not expected to pitch in a game this month.

“We can go without a steady fifth starter until May,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “We’ve got time. That makes me feel better.”

The Dodgers will need to replace Ryu’s turn in the rotation April 14 against the Seattle Mariners.

Mattingly described Ryu’s throwing program as “submaximal.”

“It wasn’t much more than you or I playing catch in the backyard,” Mattingly said.
