Roll out the tarp, it’s not time for Dodger baseball. Update.

There are three types of Dodger fans: Those who go to some of the games and watch other games on TV; those who go to most of the games and gave up on watching games on TV long ago; and those who are willing to sit in Dodger Stadium while surrounded by rain, occasional flashes of lightning, and only a big tarp on the field.

If you belong to the third group of fans, take a bow.

Then get under a roof because … for goodness sakes, lightning!

As of 6:15 p.m., the Dodgers and San Diego Padres are still expected to play a game here at 7:05 p.m. That ought to change soon, but no official word has been relayed to the press box.

Update (6:50 p.m.): The tarp is off the field, and first pitch has been tentatively scheduled for 7:30.

Rain is such an infrequent visitor to Dodger Stadium during the baseball season, some questioned whether there is even a tarp on the premises. Today, we learned there is one. At 5:27 p.m. today, a team of men wearing blue short-sleeved shirts unfurled a big white sheet over the infield. It’s still there.

In and of itself, a tarp is not enough to entertain a stadium full of fans. Still, there were already a few thousand brave souls in their seats by 6 p.m. Not many were actually in their seats. Most were huddled under a roof somewhere. A few fans decided to sit exposed to the elements, then changed their minds when the lightning struck.

For now, the rain is steady and the sky is gray. The forecast provided to my iPhone by The Weather Channel predicts an 80 percent chance of rain at 8 p.m., then only clouds by 9 p.m. The start of the game might be delayed until then. Official word should come soon.

The forecast tomorrow (TWC, iPhone) calls for sun. The Dodgers have an off-day scheduled for Thursday, but the Padres do not. If the game is cancelled for some reason, expect a twinbill tomorrow.

It would be the first game rained out at Dodger Stadium since April 17, 2000.
