Game 3: Dodgers 7, Padres 4.

Adrian Gonzalez‘s three home runs were the story. You can read all about it here, and watch all three as often as you please:

Gonzalez told Alanna Rizzo on the field after the game that he’s “not a home run hitter.” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly agrees.

Padres starter Andrew Cashner, who allowed all three of Gonzalez’s home runs, bemoaned his reliance on his triple-digit fastball after the game. “He’s a good hitter and he’s pretty comfortable right now swinging the bat,” Cashner said. “I thought I had a good game plan against him tonight, but I just didn’t execute it. I made three mistakes in the same three spots. I’ve got to be better than that and mix in more some off-speed stuff — especially when I’m not locating my fastball.”

Bud Black, who managed Gonzalez once upon a time, was even more effusive.

He’s a natural hitter, a natural baseball player,” Black said. “I don’t know if there’s anybody on the field who has played more baseball games than Adrian Gonzalez. So the repetitions that he has gotten over the years on a baseball field from the time that he was a very very young boy, playing in San Diego, Mexico, through the amateur ranks, high school and the minor years — this guy has played a ton of baseball. So he’s a natural baseball player and a really polished professional hitter. He has power, the ability to hit for average and kick in runs, he used the whole field, and does what the situation calls for. He’s a tremendous player. He’s a Gold Glover on defense, he’s been an All-Star — he does it all.”

Some neat factoids that didn’t make my game story:

• Gonzalez once hit three home runs in a game in Mexico.
• Gonzalez is 10-for-13 (.769) with 27 total bases. The rest of the Dodgers are 17-for-87 (.195) with 29 total bases.
• Gonzalez has a nine-game hitting streak against the Padres.
• The Colorado Rockies, Boston Red Sox, and Gonzalez all have hit five home runs this season. No other team has hit more than four.
• Gonzalez was presented with his 2014 Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards on the field before the game. Maybe the Dodgers will consider doing the same thing before every home game for good measure.
