Game 17: Brandon McCarthy is hurt in a slugfest.

True story: As I was taking the elevator up to the press box today, a man turned to a boy who could be about his son’s age and remarked that the Padres needed to win this game in order to tie the Dodgers for first place in the National League West. He was right, of course. It was a reminder that people still care about the standings in April. Sometimes I need that reminder.

My apologies, then, to that Padre-faithful family for pointing out that your beloved team will not end the weekend in first place.

The Dodgers (11-6) lead the Rockies (10-8) by a game and a half, and the Padres (10-9) by two games. They also have a starting pitcher dealing with a stiff elbow. Scott Baker starts the series finale Sunday.

Saturday’s box score is here.
