Hyun-Jin Ryu has his left shoulder labrum repaired, won’t return until 2016. Update.

SAN FRANCISCO — Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu is out of shoulder surgery and the results matched the expectations. The left-hander needed a repair of his left labrum and will not pitch again until 2016.

The surgery was performed in Los Angeles by team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

“It went as well as could be expected,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “They felt he could be ready to pitch next year, in spring training.

Ryu, 28, faced a bleak outlook after being unable to throw off a mound since his last bullpen session May 1. Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said Tuesday the possibility of surgery only came up in recent days.

“Stan (Conte, the Dodgers’ head athletic trainer) was optimistic and upbeat about it being as good as it could possibly be,” Mattingly said. “For someone who had to have surgery, it sounded like it was a really good result.”

Update (1 p.m.): The Dodgers’ press release announcing the surgery contained no new information. Ryu’s final diagnosis was a torn labrum.
