ARLINGTON, Texas — The San Francisco Giants hired Bruce Bochy to manage their club on Oct. 27, 2006. The Dodgers promoted Don Mattingly to succeed Joe Torre on Sept. 17, 2010.

No National League manager has been with his team longer.

That was one consequence of the San Diego Padres firing Bud Black on Monday, one day after the Dodgers broke their hearts in a 12-inning victory. Coaches are fired every year, but Mattingly said the news about Black surprised him.

“Mike (Redmond) down in Miami surprised me. This surprised me with Bud,” he said. “I think we all understand what happens and how it works. It still surprises me. I think Buddy is a great guy and a really good manager. It does surprise me.”

Mattingly said it didn’t occur to him until he was told by a reporter that only Bochy has lasted longer than he among NL managers.

“Time’s gone fast, that’s for sure,” Mattingly said. “You never start out thinking about the other side of it. I start thinking about the winning side of it.”
