Dodgers place Kiké Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list, recall Austin Barnes from Triple-A.

Kiké Hernandez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday and will miss at least that time with a strained left hamstring. Austin Barnes, who was already in the ballpark in advance of a Tuesday call-up, joins the active roster for tonight’s game against the San Francisco Giants.

Hernandez suffered the injury in the eighth inning of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, in which the Dodgers did not collect a hit. It comes at a bad time for the Dodgers and Hernandez, who had a .927 OPS in August that allowed him to surpass Joc Pederson on the Dodgers’ center-field depth chart.

Before Hernandez was officially placed on the DL, here’s what Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said about the injury:

Starting second baseman Howie Kendrick hasn’t played since Aug. 9 because of a strained left hamstring. In the scenario Mattingly presented repeatedly last week, Kendrick was supposed to play some minor-league rehab games last weekend and join the Dodgers sometime this week.

However, Kendrick still isn’t able to run at full speed. Here’s what Mattingly said about Kendrick this afternoon:

It sounds like Kendrick will be playing games before Hernandez at this point. The Dodgers might not have both men in uniform for at least another two weeks.

Given the Dodgers’ offensive struggles recently, that’s a tough blow. Here’s where Kendrick and Hernandez ranked among the Dodgers’ leaders in OPS last month:

Chase Utley, who’s in the starting lineup tonight against the Giants, and Jose Peraza are the Dodgers’ primary second basemen in the meantime.

Barnes was expected to be called up Tuesday, when rosters expand to 40, along with pitchers Mike Bolsinger and Ian Thomas. The Dodgers are also expected to activate Joel Peralta from the 15-day disabled list.

Eighteen different players have missed a total of 711 games while on the Dodgers’ disabled list (either the 15-day or 60-day) since the season began. Hernandez will be the Dodgers’ 19th player to land on the DL this season He might be the last; the 15-day DL isn’t typically used in September since active rosters are already at full capacity.
