The Dodgers promoted their top pitching prospect, 19-year-old left-hander Julio Urias on Monday.
In defiance of perhaps every expectation outside the organization, Urias wasn’t promoted to the major leagues and the debut didn’t go well.
Urias allowed three runs in the first inning for Triple-A Oklahoma City in a home game against the Iowa Cubs. Juan Jaime replaced Urias to begin the second inning, leaving Urias’ earned-run average at 27.00 for the moment.
Iowa sent nine batters to the plate. Two singled, four reached on walks, and two struck out. Urias threw 44 pitches. Because Oklahoma City scored three runs on a Kyle Jensen home run in the bottom of the first inning, Urias did not factor into the win/loss decision.
Urias spent the first five months of the season with Double-A Tulsa, which will not qualify for the Texas League playoffs. Oklahoma City will participate in the Pacific Coast League playoffs when its season ends Sept. 7. Urias’ promotion gives him a chance to pitch into September without being added to the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that neither Urias nor Oklahoma City shortstop Corey Seager would be part of the first “wave” of players added to the active roster when rosters expand to 40 on Tuesday.
“We talked about different waves of guys coming up,” Mattingly said. “We’ll get to that.”
