Last night, the Dodgers completed a minor league deal and acquired outfielder Chris Heisey from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Heisey, 30, began the season with the Dodgers and appeared in 17 major league games before he was designated for assignment on July 30. With the Dodgers’ Triple-A Oklahoma City and the Blue Jays’ Triple-A Buffalo, he combined to hit .218 with 16 homers and 39 RBIs in 80 games.
The timing of the trade is interesting. Last night the Dodgers also acquired another Triple-A outfielder, Justin Ruggiano, who’s struggled to hit major league pitching this season and can play all three outfield positions. Heisey fits the same profile, but evidently the Dodgers wanted him back now.
In six Major League seasons with the Reds (2010-14) and Dodgers (2015), Heisey has a .246 batting average with 50 home runs and 147 RBIs in 560 games.
