SAN DIEGO — Dodgers pitcher Brett Anderson left his start against the San Diego Padres in the sixth inning with an apparent left leg injury.
Update (4:15 p.m.): The Dodgers say Anderson has a cramp in his left calf muscle.
Anderson had just allowed a single to the Padres’ Wil Myers when a Dodgers trainer popped out of the dugout to examine Anderson’s left leg below the knee. Anderson stayed on the diamond for no more than a minute before he was removed, and left-hander J.P. Howell took over on the mound.
Anderson remained in the dugout, the trainer applying pressure to the area of his left calf muscle. In the case of a severe injury, the player typically goes straight into a trainer’s room, so there is reason to be optimistic.
In Anderson’s case, any injury is cause for concern. He left a game in Atlanta in July with irritation in the sheath around his left Achilles tendon. That injury didn’t cause Anderson to miss any time, but this problem is affecting the same general area — perhaps the reason Anderson was removed so quickly.
His final line: 5 ⅔ innings, four hits, one earned run, four walks and four strikeouts. The Padres got their only run against Anderson on a home run by Jedd Gyorko in the third inning. It was Gyorko’s third home run of the four-game series.
The Dodgers lead the game, 2-1.
