Zack Greinke will not start for the Dodgers against the Arizona Diamondbacks because of a sore right calf, the team announced, though he is not expected to miss more than one start.
Greinke leads the major leagues with a 1.65 earned-run average and a .857 winning percentage (18-3). He missed a short amount of time in March 2014 during spring training with the same injury.
Update (4:30 p.m.): Right-hander Carlos Frias will start in Greinke’s place. The Dodgers will essentially use today as a bullpen game while Greinke rests. The pitcher said he began feeling discomfort in his last start, but characterized the pain as “pretty minor.”
“It’s all right, it’s just not perfect,” Greinke said. “It wasn’t so bad once the game got on, but getting loose was tougher.”
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Greinke will make his next scheduled start Monday in San Francisco.
Compared to the injury in March of last year, Greinke said “it was worse then.”
Frias hasn’t started at any level since Aug. 5 for Triple-A Oklahoma City, an outing cut short by the same back pain that landed him on the 60-day disabled list throughout July and August. Frias pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In 12 major league starts this season, Frias is 4-5 with a 4.54 earned-run average. Overall he’s allowed 82 hits and walked 23 batters in 67 ⅓ innings. Three of those starts came against the Diamondbacks, to whom Frias has allowed four runs in 17 innings. He has a 2.12 ERA against the Diamondbacks this year and a 4.94 ERA against the rest of the league.
Mattingly discussed the expectations for Frias tonight during his afternoon media session:
Right-hander Chase Anderson is starting for Arizona.
