Managing expectations, Day 13: Dave Roberts reportedly gets an interview. Update.

According to multiple reports Tuesday, Dave Roberts has interviewed for the Dodgers’ managerial vacancy. Roberts has served as the San Diego Padres’ bench coach the past two seasons, and was the club’s first base coach from 2011-13.

A speedy outfielder, Roberts finished his collegiate career as UCLA’s all-time stolen bases leader. He later played for the Dodgers from 2002-04, and was traded to the Boston Red Sox midway through the 2004 campaign.

In Boston, Roberts was a teammate of current Dodgers farm director (and favored managerial candidate) Gabe Kapler. Current Dodgers executive Josh Byrnes was part of the Red Sox front-office team that traded for Roberts. The move paid off handsomely when Roberts stole a memorable base in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series that led to the first of four straight wins in a stunning upset of the New York Yankees.

Roberts retired as a player after the 2008 season. In 2010, while a member of the Padres’ front office staff, he survived a diagnosis of Stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Roberts and University of Nebraska head coach Darin Erstad are the only two external candidates known to be on the Dodgers’ interview list. Kapler, bench coach Tim Wallach and third base coach Ron Roenicke are on the internal short list.

Update (4:00 p.m.): Roberts will also be judged against his former boss in San Diego, Bud Black, as was presumed here yesterday and reported by Ken Rosenthal today. If up to 10 interviews are possible, the Dodgers are more than halfway there (Erstad, Kapler, Wallach, Roenicke, Roberts, Black).

Update (4:35 p.m.): Terry Collins will reportedly make $3 million over the next two years to manage the Mets, a figure that helps set the market for the Dodgers’ next manager. Don Mattingly is reportedly getting an average of $2.5 million per year from the Marlins.
