Season in review about nothing: Zack Greinke, ‘The Reverse Peephole.’

This is Part 18 of a series in which every member of the 2015 Dodgers has his season juxtaposed with an episode of the greatest sitcom of all-time. Don’t take it too seriously.

Zack Greinke, P.

Key stats: 19-3, 1.66 ERA (225 ERA+), 0.844 WHIP in 32 starts (222 ⅔ IP).

Seinfeld episode: “The Reverse Peephole” (season 9, episode 12).

Key quote: “Important things go in a case. You got a skull for your brain, a plastic sleeve for your comb, and a wallet for your money.”

There’s an argument to be made for Yasiel Puig or Clayton Kershaw, maybe even Joc Pederson or Corey Seager, but it’s probably safe to say that Zack Greinke was the topic of more sentences and paragraphs and emojis than any Dodger player this year.

All Greinke did was make 32 starts and complete no fewer than six innings in each, string together six scoreless starts and 45 ⅔ scoreless innings during the dog days of summer, start the All-Star game, have a baby, hit two home runs, flip his bat, smell his bat, win a Gold Glove award, and opt out of a contract that would’ve guaranteed him $77 million. He finished second in the NL Cy Young award vote and seventh in the MVP race. I had him third on my MVP ballot.

Greinke’s 225 ERA-plus, by the way, is the best in the history of a franchise that joined the National League in 1890. In 126 seasons of Dodger baseball, Greinke’s season might have been the best by any pitcher. Let that sink in for a minute.

Or a month. Maybe that’s why it’s taking so long for the Dodgers’ front office to determine how much they’re willing to pay the man.

For his part, Greinke stonewalled any questions pertaining to his contract throughout the season. (He warned us that this would be the case in spring training.) Greinke’s do-ask-don’t-tell policy applied to teammates as well as the media.

Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson said recently that re-signing Greinke is the Dodgers’ top priority, though that hadn’t happened as of Thursday morning (maybe because Johnson’s comments prompted Greinke’s agent to increase their asking price?). Greinke is reportedly weighing his choice of a 5- or 6-year contract, with only the Giants and Dodgers still part of the bidding.

Regardless of where he signs, someone soon will pay Greinke very well for a long time. Whoever drew Greinke’s name in the Dodgers’ Secret Santa pool would be wise to get him a new wallet.

This was a sore subject for George in “The Reverse Peephole,” when his overflowing wallet took on Greinke-like proportions.

Greinke is from Orlando. Maybe he can score a free tiger poster next time he gasses up his car.
