NASHVILLE — The Dodgers have re-signed second baseman Chase Utley to a one-year contract, according to multiple reports Sunday. CBSsports.com reported that Utley will receive $7 million.

Utley, who turns 37 later this month, batted .202 after the Dodgers acquired him from the Philadelphia Phillies for prospects in August. The Dodgers declined Utley’s $16 million option after the season.

A star second baseman for more than a decade in Philadelphia, Utley also saw time at third base and first base after the trade. That positional versatility might be endearing Utley to the Dodgers as a utility infielder.

Utley, who starred at Long Beach Poly High School and UCLA, reportedly is seeking to play closer to home in 2016. He was suspended two games by Major League Baseball for a slide into second base that broke the leg of New York Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada in the National League Division Series. Utley subsequently appealed the suspension; the appeal hasn’t been heard by the appointed arbitrator yet.
