Hyun-Jin Ryu isn’t expected to pitch in spring training now.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday that he doesn’t expect pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu to appear in a Cactus League game this spring.

Ryu, who hasn’t faced live hitters and only recently resumed throwing off a mound, has been progressing slowly in his recovery from shoulder surgery last season.

“Obviously when you’re trying to get ready for a season and you look at the timetable for Ryu, he’s pushed back,” Roberts said. “There’s guys that we have to focus on that are going to be here. I think that right now, where he’s at with the training staff, getting back, we definitely have to put more emphasis on the guys who are going to break with it.”

Ryu has said that he is targeting a May return, but Roberts admitted that timetable appears unrealistic.

“The throwing program takes time,” Roberts said. “I’m not going to put a date on when he comes back.”

Ryu is expected to throw off a mound again in the next few days.
