Ross Stripling’s changeup has been a very good pitch in 2016.

Ross StriplingATLANTA — Ross Stripling makes his third start of the season today for the Dodgers against the Atlanta Braves. I should probably wait until after the game to riff on this topic, since it’s unfair to compare him to the other starters on staff when they’ve all started three games and he’s only started two.

But here we go, because this was an eye-popping stat even if the sample size is tiny: According to FanGraphs.com, Stripling has had the most effective changeup of any starter in baseball this season. It’s more effective than Felix Hernandez‘s changeup, more effective than Sonny Gray‘s, more effective than Stephen Strasburg‘s.

Stripling has thrown 29 changeups this season. Eleven were put in play, and only one of those resulted in a hit. That rate isn’t sustainable over the course of a full season, but it points to just how good the pitch can be in a small sample.

If nothing else, it’s something to watch for as his third game, and his first season, and his burgeoning career, progresses.
