For Julio Urias, baseball’s top pitching prospect, the future is now.
The Dodgers are expected to purchase Urias’ contract in advance of Friday’s game against the New York Mets. Left-hander Alex Wood was scratched with left triceps soreness and will start Monday’s game against the Chicago Cubs instead. Urias, 19, will become the youngest pitcher to start a game for the Dodgers since Dick Calmus 1963.
Urias has an active 27-inning scoreless streak for Triple-A Oklahoma City. The left-hander leads the Pacific Coast League in earned-run average (1.10) and was scheduled to start today in Fresno.
The Dodgers are flying New York today to begin a three-game series against the team that defeated them last October in a five-game division series.
Urias might only make one start, Andrew Friedman says. Opinions are mixed as to how well his outing will go. Who is Julio Urias?
