The Dodgers announced today that pitcher Alex Wood will undergo “an arthroscopic debridement of his left elbow” this afternoon in New York. The estimated recovery time is eight weeks.

Wood, 25, hasn’t pitched since May 30. He might not pitch again this season. Eight weeks from now is the middle of September — too late a juncture for the Dodgers to bank on Wood rejoining their rotation for the stretch run. Wood pitched out of the bullpen in his rookie season of 2013, and that might be the most realistic role if he is to rejoin the Dodgers this season.

Initially placed on the 15-day disabled list due to posterior elbow soreness, Wood was transferred to the 60-day disabled list June 29.

Wood and Clayton Kershaw — who’s now out indefinitely with a herniated disc in his lower back — threw simulated games over the weekend at Dodger Stadium.
