The release curiously does not say that the Dodgers exercised the option clause in Puig or Fields’ contract, or where either player will be sent. There’s no reason to believe they won’t be sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City, and both players are listed on the roster on the team’s website. Oklahoma City plays tonight in Colorado Springs before returning home tomorrow.
The transactions allowed the Dodgers to add right fielder Josh Reddick and pitcher Jesse Chavez to their active roster. Reddick is batting cleanup and playing right field against the Colorado Rockies tonight.
Meanwhile, Rich Hill became the 23rd player to be placed on the Dodgers’ disabled list this year. According to the club that’s a National League record. Hill was on the disabled list of the Oakland A’s when the Dodgers traded for him yesterday.
None of the moves were unexpected.
After missing time with a strained right hamstring, Puig went 3 for 5 Sunday in his first start in more than a week. When the Dodgers’ front office could not find a trade partner before the 1 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline Monday, they told Puig not to fly with the team to Denver in anticipation of today’s demotion.
According to multiple reports, Brock Stewart is at Coors Field today, though he hasn’t been officially added to the Dodgers’ active roster. Stewart is a candidate to start tomorrow in place of Kenta Maeda, who is often given an extra day of rest by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
Update (3:48 p.m.):
Roberts said Brock Stewart starts tomorrow, followed by Maeda and Kazmir.
