What’s next for Clayton Kershaw after Tuesday’s sim game at Dodger Stadium?

DENVER — The only things missing from Dodger Stadium on Tuesday will be the simulated fans, simulated tickets, simulated pregame pomp and circumstance with the volume turned to 11, and the simulated rush of traffic entering and exiting the park.

Otherwise, there will be simulated baseball games for Clayton Kershaw, Brandon McCarthy and Brett Anderson. Single-A Rancho Cucamonga will supply the simulated hitters.

For Kershaw, the sim game follows a 60-pitch bullpen session Friday at Dodger Stadium. It’s the first time he has faced live hitters since re-starting his throwing program as he tries to come back from a mild disc herniation in his lower back. Kershaw was 11-2 with a 1.79 earned-run average when he pitched his last game for the Dodgers in June.

Manager Dave Roberts said the next step for Kershaw could be one of “a couple different scenarios.” One would see him rejoin the Dodgers’ rotation, presumably no earlier than next Sunday’s game against the San Diego Padres.

There are minor league games scheduled for that day too, at every level of the organization, and Kershaw might see his next game action there. His preference is to return as soon as possible. Whether he pitches next in the majors or minors could make for an interesting discussion with the club’s training staff.

McCarthy (right hip) and Anderson (finger blister) are both on the 15-day disabled list. McCarthy is eligible to be activated at any time, while Anderson can’t rejoin the team before Sept. 5.

Alex Wood, on the 60-day disabled list following arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow in June, is targeting a mid-September return as a relief pitcher. Roberts said the left-hander “is about a week away” from throwing off a mound.

Incidentally, Kershaw, McCarthy and Wood were all in Denver today. They joined the team flight to participate in the Dodgers’ annual fantasy football draft, then flew back home to Los Angeles.
