Wells was good enough not only to win, but also to inspire his teammates, all of whom -- yes, even Jeff Kent and Luis Gonzalez -- are at least four years younger than he is. He went five innings, allowed seven hits and gave up two runs, and the Mets left six runners on base -- three of them in scoring position, while he was on the mound. Mike Lieberthal said after the game that Wells didn't have his curveball working and also didn't have a great changeup. But the fact he was able to fight through it and pitch well enough to win says a lot about why the Dodgers wanted this guy in the first place. ... Jeff Kent appears to be OK after leaving the game in the fourth inning when he was hit in the side of his helmet with a pitch. Grady said he should be OK to play tomorrow. ...
