Houlton sent packing

D.J. Houlton was optioned to Las Vegas to make room for Mark Sweeney, meaning the Dodgers are carrying 11 pitchers now. ... When I got to my room at the Westin, I noticed that the cover of the St. Louis 2007 Convention and Visitors Guide features a great shot of Albert Pujols appearing to take Brad Penny downtown in a game here last year. Several of the fans have raised their arms in triumph, and Kenny Lofton (remember him?) is on a dead sprint toward the centerfield wall. Well, never wanting to be accused of not doing my homework, I checked the box score on retrosheet.org and discovered that Pujols didn't homer off Penny in that game. It was one of two doubles off the centerfield wall. But if the publishers wanted to make it look like Prince Albert was going yard, they did a good job of it.

ah yes...the good old years when we had a good centerfielder. Seems so long ago.

Oh, c'mon G.A.F.

Kenny Lofton had trouble catching fly balls all over the bleepin place last year. I'm surprised you don't remember. On the hand, he could actually bat leadoff and get on base like a normal person.

Lofton had a Cannon compared to Pierre too. Pierre I the worst position player signing in Dodger history.

Lofton had a Cannon compared to Pierre too. Pierre Is the worst position player signing in Dodger history.

Also, who cares if Lofton didn't play everyday. Now we are stuck with a centerfield that we don't want to play everyday.

I'm not a Juan Pierre defender, but they DID need a guy who could player every day, especially after three years of J.D. Drew in the outfield.

I'm just saying, Lofton wasn't a good centerfielder last year. Not by a longshot. Five, six, ten years ago, yes, but not last year, and not now.

So with Houlton down, who's the longman for if and when Lowe goes out early in a game, or Tomko or Hendrickson get knocked out?

Lofton>>>>>Pierre

Then, now and forever.

Like I said who cares if Lofton doesn't play everyday. Juan Pierre doesn't deserve to play everyday. Pierre is the highest paid Pinch Runner in baseball and he's the only pinch runner thats playing everyday.

His contract has screwed the Dodgers for now and for the next 4 years. It' a horrible deal by Ned.

I just hope that Ned's got a deal in the works for a reliever, with a team that's going to take Saenz off our hands, since he just became redundant by the Sweeney signing (yeah, I know, one's LH, one's RH, but still ...). Alternately, I'd love to see Meloan get called up and Saenz DFA'd. (Nothing against Olmedo personally, he's just done.)
