Rumors abound, action doesn't

So far, this has got to be the dullest winter meetings I have ever covered. The biggest news of the first two days was that Tampa Bay traded the troubled Elijah Dukes to Washington (yawn). The rumor of the hour, at least where your hometown Dodgers are concerned, seems to be that they are coveting Baltimore's Erik Bedard and that there is a possible deal in the works that would send Jonathan Broxton and Matt Kemp to the Orioles. I find that hard to believe, mostly that the Dodgers would part with Broxton at a time when they are about to enter the season with a 38-year-old closer, but I'm running it down anyway. Check with ya later.

These trade rumors are frightening, aren't they?

The only way that trade works is if the O's take Meloan instead of Broxton, AND the Dodgers go ahead and sign Andruw Jones or Aaron Rowand.

Even with all that, they'd still have to dump Juan Pierre AND move Andre Ethier to right AND have a left fielder in mind, which I suppose could be Delwyn Young.

trading Broxton would allowing Ned to talk Rob Nen out of retirement. He's going to do it.

I'm really hoping this rumor is false. Bedard is a real good pitcher, but he's coming off a career year and is a free agent after 2009. I'd much rather have Kemp and Broxton over the long haul.

Actually, I know what you mean, but Bedard is not just some guy coming off a career year. He's a solid, solid starter, who could very well be the L.A. ace in 2008.

Even more so, Dan Haren would immediately jump to the front of the rotation, and Joe Blanton is a good arm too.

I'm not pushing for a trade like this, but you have to give to get, and the pitchers whose names are being tossed out there are very, very, very intriguing.

Tony... anything new on the Bedard-to-the-Dodgers front?? Inquiring minds would love to know...!
