Dodgers close to re-signing Sweeney to one-year deal

Just talked to a club official who told me the deal isn't done, but my guess is it will be done soon, possibly as soon as tomorrow. Most of the team brass is flying to Vero Beach on Tuesday, so this would seem like the sort of last-minute business they would want to get taken care of before they leave town. On the surface, this doesn't sound like a terribly significant move. But if the Dodgers hadn't re-signed him, it would have left their bench sorely lacking. For one, they wouldn't have had anyone who was accustomed to pinch hitting, something Sweeney has made a nice career of (he presently is second on the all-time career pinch-hits list). This also gives them an additional backup corner infielder.
