Astros 12, Dodgers 10 ... and a perfect (if unofficial) sendoff

The boys mounted a furious rally that fell short when Furcal grounded out with the bases loaded, capping a day in which he went 3 for 6 with a home run and two triples. When it was over, the entire team walked into the rightfield corner and gathered, while a camera crew held Tommy up at home plate. When they were done, Tommy walked up the rightfield line, with several cameras following him, and the players gathered in the RF corner, made an arch with their bats, and Tommy walked through it as Tina Turner's Simply the Best blared on the public address system. This was officially Tommy Lasorda Day, even if it wasn't the official sendoff for the team because Dodgers officials still aren't 100-percent certain (they are 99.9999999 percent certain) their complex in Glendale will be ready by next spring. ... As for the game, Ethier went 4 for 5 with a triple and a HR and three RBI. Pierre did go 0 for 5, but contrary to a comment posted on this blog, he did NOT strike out twice, or even once, for that matter. But those five consecutive groundouts -- including yet another failed attempt to bunt his way on in the first inning when he yet again dropped his bunt about three feet in front of the plate -- certainly doesn't look good. But my last Dodgertown meal was NOT crow. It was grilled chicken. Billingsley got knocked around for five runs on six hits over five innings, with three home runs, but the wind was blowing HARD out to center field. ... Dodgers fall to 7-13-2, and despite all the pomp and circumstance, they still have another game in Florida tomorrow at the Marlins.

I'll continue to say Pierre will be dealt before Opening Day no matter how many bunts he doesn't get down.

And no surprise on that score. Every 2007 Dodger starting pitcher was better at laying one down, and that includes, ugh, Brett Tomko.

My thoughts:
Pierre just isn't a fit for the Dodgers at this time.

The Dodgers need to trade Pierre for more reasons than Ethier being ready to man Left Field. The fact the payroll is maxed out, freeing even a portion of his salary helps a lot.

The whole idea "this is a good problem to have" is annoy...This is why we have farm systems...Someone chokes or gets injured upstairs, we go down and grab someone else (Repko, Lombard, etc).

Trading Ethier doesn't free up any cash, so Pierre is the option, not because he isn't good enough, just business. He'll do fine with 10 other teams, just not in LA.

Personally, I like Pierre and what he brings, however I like Ethier more.

The payroll is maxed out? How would freeing up <$5M help the roster at this point in the spring?

5-10M freed over the next 4 years would pay for a lot. It would give us the flexibility we current don't have with our payroll. In order to take on a salary of another player, assuming this was a goal. Meaning, I don't see McCourt raising the payroll, if we needed to expand somewhere.

Also, the salary freed was just an added bonus that trading Pierre would give us...While trading Ethier, wouldn't do anything for us, except provide a weaker arm in LF and 15-20 less home runs per year.

Jorden - Trading Pierre isn't going to free up much of anything. No one will want a $9 million a year mediocre LF, just like 98% of Dodgers fans don't want a mediocre LF. Colletti would have to eat a very large portion of the contract and swallow his pride. Something he needs to do if he wants to put the best 8 players on the field every day.

While I certainly wouldn't mind Pierre traded, I'd think they'd have to pay the bulk of his salary as part of the deal, or take on another team's financial albatross. Either way, you're not saving very much money.

My goal isn't to save the 5-10 million per year for the next 4 years...It's simply to get the best 3 outfielders in the Dodger Uniform. Last year, Kemp/Ethier were blocked due to Gonzo, this year we have Pierre. I just don't want to see Pierre get the start, the after performing poorly 2-3 months into the season, Ethier takes over and then we lose the 2-3 months we should have given him earlier.

The fact that Pierre has a large salary is all the more reason to make him that trading chip. We can get creative, like we did with odalis (eat some salary, give some minor leaguer(s) to give the other team some promising talent.

I don't have anything against Pierre, except the fact he's not the best man for the job...and we'll already have one 9M$ bench player in Nomar, so we don't have room for another.

As I recall it took Ned quite a while to dump Fatdalis Perez on the Royals. Not because he couldn't trade him but it seemed like he trusted him to turn his season around. Dumb arce Ned.

He still has another 4 years and $36M on his contract. They'd have to pay about $15-18M potentially to make this compelling for another team. I can't see Ned doing that so soon after handing him that big contract. Now if Ned gets the old Depodesta-treatment at the end of this year, the new GM could actively try to dump that contract.

But if your goal is to play the best 3 OFers, that can be accomplished by simply benching Pierre and making him into a decent (albeit expensive, but that ship has sailed) role player.

Trade Pierre for Joe Crede.

Joe Crede for Pierre? That's disgusting. You're trading one player with horrible on-base percentage for another. Ethier should be starting at LF and LaRoche, once healthy, should take over the 3B role. He's going to be a strong player who can drive the ball and generate walks.

The last day at vero beach and furcal, pierre, repco, either were the regulars starting .Martin pinch hit and Loney ran for sweeny ,It would have been nice for Martin & loney, maybe Kent to pinch hit 7000+fans to say goodbye to the fans .

How is it "disgusting" to deal a guy with 4/36 left on his deal for a guy who could be cut loose with no future obligation after 2008? I'd do that deal if Crede's OBP were .001.

Another year of Pierre everyday is worse than a couple months of Crede.

The White Sox have a full OF already, unless they want to bench Carlos Quentin in favor of Pierre. And based on the Giants pursuit of Crede, the White Sox want some pitching and/or prospects in return.

You guys are idiots. Not even one comment about what Tony reported. I check this blog once a week, and you guys are STILL arguing over Juan Pierre. wtf???

Tony? no matter how much of a blow hard Tommy is, the man DOES bleed blue. You can not take that away from him. Him and Vinny ARE Dodger baseball.

Crow is not that bad, Tony.

Good call Rob.

Tony, you know we appreciate your Dodger coverage. Your blogs are refreshing, especially after reading the drivel at the Times and on dodgers.com.

You are my source for all news Dodgers....

Keep up the good work.

I see Preston Mattingly hit a homer in the game. Is that his first game with the big club?

Why does Ned keep getting bashed? The team is infinitely better than the one he got from Depodesta. He is honest and candid in his responses to questions. He hasn't gotten rid of any of our prized kids, and I'll bet that JP watches opening day from the pine!

Yeah and DePodesta had nothing to do with bringing in our top two starters. Oh wait..

Ned brought in Martin, Loney, Kemp, Bills, etc..oh wait, that was Logan White.

Ok, Ned did bring in Saito and Furcal but do we really need to detail the awful signings?

This JP/Ethier debate is a joke. Who is the better offensive a player? Who is the better defensive player? Would it Dodgers trade for JP if he was available to sit Kemp/Ethier?
Ethier is not an unproven commodity. He batted over 400 after the All-Star break and was still benched and when he did play he batted eighth. There are games when Little started Almedo Saenz and batted him third with Andre batting -- yes eighth. The simple fact is the dodger management, including apparently Joe Torre, does not know how to manage young talent. Look how they handled Loney last year. They sent Loney to Vegas and started Garciaparra at first and kept him batting third despite his lack of production for more than three quarters of a season.
There are good reasons why knowledgeable dodger baseball fans are frustrated over this ridiculous debate. They should trade JP and Young and get what they can and pay what they must on his ill-advised long-term contract.
