Brandon League, Brandon Beachy to throw in Arizona this week

Two rehabbing Dodgers pitchers will take the next step in their progressions next week.

Reliever Brandon League and starting pitcher Brandon Beachy are both scheduled to go to the Dodgers’ spring training facility in Glendale, Arizona, while the rest of the team travels to St. Louis on Friday.

League has been on the disabled list since the start of the season with a right shoulder impingement. Beachy is recovering from his second Tommy John surgery and was signed in the offseason as a low-risk, high-potential pitcher. To this point in the season, League and Beachy had been traveling with the team on almost every road trip.

Beachy is scheduled to throw live batting practice for the third time Wednesday at Dodger Stadium.

Get ready for the next Cuban sensation.

According to the Dodgers’ official website, Cuban infielder Hector Olivera could finally be on his way to Los Angeles.

The Dodgers and the 30-year-old Olivera agreed to a six-year, $62.5 million deal in March. Reports indicate that Olivera, training in the Dominican Republic, received his visa Monday morning and could be headed to Los Angeles on Friday to complete his physical.

Olivera’s stock skyrocketed after a series of showcases, and some project that he could hit 15-20 homers and drive in 75 runs in his first season in the major leagues.

Olivera does come with some risk. An MRI on his elbow in March revealed a slight tear in his UCL. It apparently merited enough consideration to include a clause in the contract that allows the Dodgers to add a seventh year at just $1 million if he needs surgery to repair his UCL.

Former Bishop Amat and Pepperdine baseball star Dan Haren also had a homecoming of sorts, returning to Dodger Stadium for the first time since the offseason trade that sent Haren and Dee Gordon to the Miami Marlins.

Like Gordon, Haren has blazed to an impressive start with the Marlins, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.68 ERA and 24 strikeouts and eight walks in 37 innings. He also has a microscopic 0.92 WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched).

It was a bold and ambitious move, part of a aggressive offseason for the Dodgers’ revamped front office.

The decision to sign oft-injured left-hander Brett Anderson to a one-year, $10 million contract despite a slew of injuries and ailments certainly was the kind of high-risk signing that could have a major payout or blow up in their faces.

The 26-year-old left-hander has been effective when healthy, but had not pitched more than 100 innings in the regular season since 2010.

Yet through the first month of the season, Anderson’s health has held up.

While Anderson is still searching for consistency, Continue reading “Dodgers left-hander Brett Anderson has avoided injury woes” »
