The Blake Smith pitching experiment will continue in the Chicago White Sox organization.
Smith, 27, was the Dodgers’ second-round draft pick in 2009. He reached Double-A as an outfielder before converting into a relief pitcher in 2013. This year he had a promising 1.62 earned-run average in 16 relief appearances with Double-A Tulsa.
Friday, the Dodgers traded Smith to the Chicago White Sox for minor-league lefty Eric Surkamp (right).
Surkamp, 27, has appeared in 42 games (seven starts) in three big league seasons with the Giants (2011, 2013) and White Sox (2014), going 4-3 with a 6.20 ERA.
The White Sox designated Surkamp for assignment in April. He was 3-0 record with one save and a 2.81 ERA in 11 games (one start) at Triple-A Charlotte this season and will now report to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Surkamp has a 40-19 record with a 3.09 ERA in 116 career games (95 starts) in seven minor league seasons.
