Bud Norris will start for the Dodgers on Thursday.

Bud Norris, who threw 5 ⅔ innings Saturday in a rehab start for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, will start for the Dodgers Thursday in Philadelphia, manager Dave Roberts said.

Norris made only one rehab start after being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right lat muscle. The right-hander allowed one run and four hits for Rancho Cucamonga, throwing 46 strikes among 59 pitches. His fastball topped out at 96 mph.

He’s effectively taking the rotation spot held by Brandon McCarthy. McCarthy was placed on the 15-day DL Sunday with stiffness in his right hip.

Kenta Maeda and Scott Kazmir are starting Tuesday and Wednesday against the Phillies, respectively.

The Dodgers will keep Julio Urias and Ross Stripling on the active roster as long relievers along with Brock Stewart, who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier Sunday. Stewart took over for Brett Anderson after one inning Sunday.

Put this one in the bizarre baseball injuries file: Dodgers pitcher Bud Norris believes he hurt his back making a pickoff throw to first base.

Norris exited his last start July 31 against the Arizona Diamondbacks when he a strained lat muscle in the first inning. Norris walked the first batter of that game, Jean Segura. Before throwing a pitch to the next batter, Michael Bourn, Norris made two throws over to first base.

“I spun quick,” he recalled. “My left foot kind of caught — my spike caught the dirt. I watched video like five or six times: ‘how did that happen?’ ”

When his spike got stuck in the dirt, Norris believes he may have hyperextended his lat muscle.

After playing catch the last three days without pain, Norris said he will throw a bullpen session tomorrow, an off-day for the club. He is not expected to need a minor league rehab start before he’s eligible to return Aug. 16.

The Dodgers are expected to place right-handed pitcher Bud Norris on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Monday and recall Ross Stripling to make a spot start Saturday against the Boston Red Sox. Stripling arrived at Dodger Stadium on Friday afternoon, but the move won’t be official tonight. By waiting until tomorrow, the Dodgers can keep an extra pitcher in the bullpen for tonight’s game against the Red Sox.

If Bud Norris goes on the 15-day disabled list because of his back injury, the identity of Saturday’s starter against the Boston Red Sox is TBD.

What roster moves do the Dodgers have to make today? Update.

Technically, Yasiel Puig does not have to be sent to the minor leagues today.

Doing so would amount to the Dodgers’ front office keeping its word, and that counts for something. It’s also unclear why Puig would not have a seat on the Dodgers’ flight to Denver on Monday if only for him to be in the clubhouse today.

In any event, the Dodgers must make two changes to their 25-man roster. Outfielder Josh Reddick was on the A’s active roster when he was traded to the Dodgers on Monday, and pitcher Jesse Chavez was on the Blue Jays’ roster at the time of Monday’s trade too. Whose roster spots are those two likely to take?
