The Dodgers prospect needed a triple in his final at-bat in the eighth inning to complete a rare cycle. Instead he doubled off Braves prospect Ryne Harper, settling for a 4-for-5, four-RBI performance in the Desert Dogs’ 10-1 win over Peoria.
Sweeney, a 13th-round draft pick by the Dodgers in 2012, spent all of 2014 at Double-A Chattanooga. The versatile 23-year-old posted a .288/.387/.463 slash line and went 15 for 31 in stolen-base attempts. His batting average was above .300 before a late tailspin, and he led the Southern League in walks.
A switch hitter, Sweeney is batting .387 in 10 AFL games. He’s played second base, shortstop and center field.
“He has a chance to be a good player,” Sweeney’s Double-A manager, Razor Shines, said in a September interview. “The strong suit is that he can play all over and he can hit. He hits the ball hard.”

Ryu is already 1-0 with a 0.00 earned-run average after picking up the win last Sunday in Sydney, Australia. Ryu shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks for five innings before a toe injury caused him to come out of the game.
That injury has healed, Mattingly said, and Ryu will oppose Andrew Cashner at Petco Park in the Padres’ Opening Day game.
Clayton Kershaw was originally scheduled to start the game, but a back injury forced him to sit out. Kershaw might begin the season on the disabled list.
Ryu threw a bullpen session prior to Friday’s game and passed that preliminary test. Zack Greinke will pitch the second game of the series Tuesday against Ian Kennedy and Dan Haren will oppose Tyson Ross on Wednesday.
Haren will also start the finale of the Freeway Series on Saturday, a game that’s scheduled to begin just after 6 p.m. at Angel Stadium.
As for Friday’s game, played before an announced crowd of 39,143 at Dodger Stadium and interrupted by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, the Dodgers nearly blew it.

Darnell Sweeney‘s two-run single highlighted a 4-0 win for a team of Dodgers prospects Sunday over Yaquis de Obregon, a Mexican Pacific League squad, at the “Vamos a Tucson Mexican Baseball Fiesta” in Tucson.
The Dodgers scored all four runs in the eighth inning. After Sweeney’s single, RBI singles by Adam Law and Cody Bellinger drove in the Dodgers’ final runs.
Left-hander Chris Anderson, the Dodgers’ first-round pick in the 2013 draft, started and pitched 1 ⅔ innings, allowing no hits, no walks, and striking out two.
Tom Windle, the Dodgers’ second-round pick in June, allowed no hits over the next 1 ⅓ innings.
