The Dodgers optioned pitcher Eric Surkamp to Triple-A Oklahoma City, one day after he absorbed 3 ⅓ innings in relief of Yimi Garcia, and recalled left-hander Ian Thomas.

Thomas last pitched on Thursday for Oklahoma City, allowing four runs on five hits in 4 ⅔ innings (100 pitches). He’s 3-1 with a 4.46 ERA in 15 combined games (five starts) with OKC and Atlanta’s minor league affiliates in Gwinnett (Triple-A) and Mississippi (Double-A).

Thomas, acquired in the May trade that sent Juan Uribe to the Atlanta Braves, has appeared in one game with the Dodgers June 2 in Colorado. He’s 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA in six combined big league games with Atlanta and Los Angeles this season.

Surkamp was charged with four runs in his Dodgers debut Monday.

Dodgers trade Blake Smith to White Sox for left-hander Eric Surkamp.

Eric SurkampThe Blake Smith pitching experiment will continue in the Chicago White Sox organization.

Smith, 27, was the Dodgers’ second-round draft pick in 2009. He reached Double-A as an outfielder before converting into a relief pitcher in 2013. This year he had a promising 1.62 earned-run average in 16 relief appearances with Double-A Tulsa.

Friday, the Dodgers traded Smith to the Chicago White Sox for minor-league lefty Eric Surkamp (right).

Surkamp, 27, has appeared in 42 games (seven starts) in three big league seasons with the Giants (2011, 2013) and White Sox (2014), going 4-3 with a 6.20 ERA.

The White Sox designated Surkamp for assignment in April. He was 3-0 record with one save and a 2.81 ERA in 11 games (one start) at Triple-A Charlotte this season and will now report to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Surkamp has a 40-19 record with a 3.09 ERA in 116 career games (95 starts) in seven minor league seasons.
