NEW YORK — Zack Greinke‘s wife is about to give birth to the couple’s first child, and now the Dodgers don’t have a pitcher to start Friday’s game against the Mets as a result.

They already didn’t have a starter for Saturday and Sunday’s games here, either.

“I think we’ll be able to get someone in here to replace Zack,” manager Don Mattingly said Thursday. “It’s up in the air at this point.”

Dodgers recall Ian Thomas from Triple-A, option Adam Liberatore.

ATLANTA — Adam Liberatore‘s major league career began with the Dodgers in April. The left-handed reliever threw 9 ⅔ innings before allowing a run. His earned-run average in 26 games since then is 6.61, and 11 of the last 21 batters Liberatore has faced have reached base.

Despite this, Liberatore might still be on the Dodgers’ 25-man roster today if the team didn’t need a long reliever so badly. Left-hander Ian Thomas was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City, swapping roster spots with Liberatore.

Liberatore had been on the 25-man roster since April 27.

Thomas has thrown up to six innings at the Triple-A level this year, and up to three innings for the Dodgers. He’s allowed four earned runs in five major league innings since the Dodgers acquired him in the trade that sent Juan Uribe to Atlanta.

The move comes one day after the Dodgers’ bullpen pitched 5 ⅓ innings in a 4-3 loss to the Braves. The day before, the Dodgers’ bullpen threw four innings.

Liberatore was a situational reliever with a power arm, the left-handed equivalent of Pedro Baez.

Thomas has amassed more frequent flier miles than this guy shuffling between Triple-A and the majors since the year began. He isn’t seen as a long-term 25-man roster candidate and could be ticketed back for the minors by the time Clayton Kershaw is on the mound Thursday against the New York Mets.

Dodgers promote Ian Thomas, option Eric Surkamp in latest Oklahoma City shuffle.

The Dodgers optioned pitcher Eric Surkamp to Triple-A Oklahoma City, one day after he absorbed 3 ⅓ innings in relief of Yimi Garcia, and recalled left-hander Ian Thomas.

Thomas last pitched on Thursday for Oklahoma City, allowing four runs on five hits in 4 ⅔ innings (100 pitches). He’s 3-1 with a 4.46 ERA in 15 combined games (five starts) with OKC and Atlanta’s minor league affiliates in Gwinnett (Triple-A) and Mississippi (Double-A).

Thomas, acquired in the May trade that sent Juan Uribe to the Atlanta Braves, has appeared in one game with the Dodgers June 2 in Colorado. He’s 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA in six combined big league games with Atlanta and Los Angeles this season.

Surkamp was charged with four runs in his Dodgers debut Monday.

Paco Rodriguez will have surgery after all, miss 8-10 weeks.

Paco Rodriguez mugshotMIAMI — Dodgers pitcher Paco Rodriguez will have arthroscopic surgery Thursday to remove loose bodies in the back of his left elbow. He is expected to miss approximately 8-10 weeks.

Rodriguez has known for weeks that he had a bone spur in the elbow (a bone spur can become a “loose body”) that would eventually require surgery. But he was able to pitch four scoreless rehab innings over four games recently with Triple-A Oklahoma City, leaving open the possibility that Rodriguez could return to the majors right away. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly even said Friday that Rodriguez would join the team in Arizona, where the Dodgers begin a three-game series Monday.

Now that Rodriguez is at least two months away from competition, his season is in jeopardy.

Mattingly said he “would think” Rodriguez could return in time to pitch for the Dodgers in the playoffs, should their season get that far.

MIAMI — The Dodgers are getting one reliever (Pedro Baez) back tonight and should be getting two more (Brandon League and Paco Rodriguez) back soon enough.

Ian Thomas was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Baez. League will pitch for the Triple-A Dodgers on Saturday and Monday. It’s not obvious whose spot League will take; the Dodgers might elect to return to an 8-man bullpen once League is activated.

The most interesting case, as it might be all year, is that of Rodriguez.
