Technically, Yasiel Puig does not have to be sent to the minor leagues today.

Doing so would amount to the Dodgers’ front office keeping its word, and that counts for something. It’s also unclear why Puig would not have a seat on the Dodgers’ flight to Denver on Monday if only for him to be in the clubhouse today.

In any event, the Dodgers must make two changes to their 25-man roster. Outfielder Josh Reddick was on the A’s active roster when he was traded to the Dodgers on Monday, and pitcher Jesse Chavez was on the Blue Jays’ roster at the time of Monday’s trade too. Whose roster spots are those two likely to take?

Grade the Dodgers at the non-waiver trade deadline (poll).

The Dodgers had a busy day Monday, acquiring Josh Reddick, Rich Hill, Jesse Chavez and Josh Fields in four separate trades. Click on each player’s name to learn more about him.

No trades involved top prospects Julio Urias, Jose De Leon, Cody Bellinger or Alex Verdugo, all of whom drew interest from other teams. Yasiel Puig remains a Dodger too, even after the club told his representatives they would try to trade him — or option him to Triple-A today if they couldn’t.

Columnist Mark Whicker believes that impatient fans are likely to be dissatisfied with Monday’s trades. What say you?

Note that all MLB teams can use the rest of this month to trade players via the waiver process, too. Chase Utley was placed on waivers before he became a Dodger last August; Adrian Gonzalez became a Dodger after the Boston Red Sox placed him on waivers in August 2012. The grade is inherently incomplete, but let’s just focus on Monday for now.

Dallas McPherson: Back to Albuquerque.

The Dodgers signed free agent Dallas McPherson to a minor-league contract Friday.

McPherson last surfaced in the majors in 2011, when he made 15 plate appearances with the White Sox. Once a top prospect in the Angels’ system, the 32-year-old flamed out due to injuries after losing the starting third base job in Anaheim to Chone Figgins in 2006. He sat out all of the 2007 season after having back surgery to fuse two vertebrae in his lower back before resurfacing in 2008 with the Albuquerque Isotopes, then a Florida Marlins affiliate.

With the Dodgers, McPherson appears headed for Albuquerque again. The Isotopes’ third baseman last season, Josh Fields, recently signed a minor-league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. McPherson has spent the majority of his career at the hot corner, but also saw time at first, center field, right field and designated hitter in 2012, when he split the year between the White Sox and Pirates’ organizations.

McPherson batted .265/.344/.490 in 2012 with 17 home runs and 62 RBIs. The Dodgers will be his sixth organization in the last seven years.

Alfredo Silverio, six others sign minor-league deals.

The Dodgers re-signed Alfredo Silverio among seven minor-league free agents who were also invited to spring training.Alfredo Silverio

Silverio, 25, missed all of last season after suffering a concussion among numerous injuries in an off-season car crash. Prior to the crash Silverio was among the Dodgers’ top prospects, batting .306/.340/.542 with 11 stolen bases and 16 homers in his first full Double-A season at Chattanooga in 2011.

Next spring he’ll be joined by infielders Ozzie Martinez and Nick Evans, right-handed pitchers Juan Abreu and Gregory Infante, left-hander Kelvin De La Cruz and catcher Wilkin Castillo.
