Dodgers scratch Hyun-Jin Ryu from Wednesday start with elbow tendinitis.

The Dodgers placed Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with left elbow tendinitis, and suddenly need a pitcher to start Wednesday against the Washington Nationals.

The Dodgers also placed reliever Casey Fien on the 15-day DL with tendinitis in his right elbow retroactive to Sunday. Outfielder Joc Pederson, whose rehab assignment at Triple-A Oklahoma City is over, was activated from the disabled list, and left-handed reliever Luis Avilan was recalled from Triple-A.

Ryu missed all of 2015, and the first three months of the 2016 regular season, while rehabbing from left shoulder labrum surgery. He returned July 7 against the San Diego Padres and allowed six runs in 4 ⅔ innings, suffering the loss. That remains his only major league start to this point in the season.

An MRI on Ryu’s left elbow showed no changes from his previous MRI.

Jose De Leon is scheduled to pitch for Oklahoma City on Wednesday. The Triple-A Dodgers are currently in Tacoma, Washington. De Leon, a 23-year-old right-hander, has yet to make his major league debut.

Brock Stewart, a 24-year-old right-hander, has made one spot start for the Dodgers already this season and was scheduled to start for Oklahoma City tonight. It’s possible the Dodgers could give Stewart an extra day’s rest before his second cup of coffee in the big leagues.

Dodgers add Carlos Frias and Hyun-Jin Ryu, excommunicate Luis Avilan and Will Venable.

Hyun-Jin Ryu

Hyun-Jin Ryu will make his 2016 debut today against the San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers will have 14 pitchers and a three-man bench when they face the San Diego Padres today.

Carlos Frias was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City and will be in the Dodgers’ bullpen today. Hyun-Jin Ryu was added to the active roster, as expected, so he could start tonight’s game. Luis Avilan was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City and outfielder Will Venable was designated for assignment.

The Dodgers needed bullpen help for today after eight relievers threw a combined 186 pitches in last night’s 14-inning loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

Frias hasn’t thrown since Sunday, when he tossed 1 ⅓ innings in relief in Nashville. He threw 27 pitches in that game and hadn’t pitched in six days before that. So he should be fresh.

As for everyone else, only Pedro Baez didn’t appear in yesterday’s game, and he had appeared in each of the two games before that.

The three lucky men on the Dodgers’ bench are Chase Utley, Chris Taylor and Yasmani Grandal. No word whether or not Manny Mota will be activated to pinch hit.

Dodgers option Julio Urias to Triple-A Oklahoma City, recall Luis Avilan.

Julio Urias‘ demotion became official Tuesday. The 19-year-old left-hander was sent back to Triple-A Oklahoma City after making eight major league starts, and left-handed reliever Luis Avilan was recalled to take his spot on the 25-man roster.

Urías, 19, went 1-2 with a 4.95 ERA in eight starts with the Dodgers after making his debut May 27. He struggled mightily in his first two games against the Mets and Cubs, both on the road, allowing eight runs in 7 ⅔ innings. Over his next five starts Urias pitched like a seasoned vet, posting a 2.49 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 25 ⅓ innings. But he was roughed up for five runs in 3 ⅓ innings Monday by the Baltimore Orioles and, with Hyun-Jin Ryu set to re-join the Dodgers’ rotation Thursday, Urias returns to Triple-A to keep sharp while presumably preserving his innings limit.

Urias has thrown 77 ⅓ total innings this year between Triple-A and the majors. He threw 80 ⅓ innings during the 2015 regular season across four minor league levels.

Avilan has appeared in four games in two stints with the Dodgers this year, allowing three runs and recording three outs. The 26-year-old averaged more than a strikeout per inning at Triple-A (29 in 27 ⅔ innings), while posting an 0-3 record with four saves and a 4.55 ERA in 26 games.

Some roster moves are coming after today’s game.

DENVER — Outfielder Carl Crawford and pitcher Louis Coleman will be added to the Dodgers’ roster for tomorrow’s game against the Miami Marlins. That means that two spots will have to be cleared after today’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

The Dodgers have carried eight relievers all this week, which manager Dave Roberts said would be the case prior to their road trip to Atlanta and Denver. It’s possible if not likely that this will change once the Dodgers return home. Zach Lee is an obvious candidate to return to Triple-A; I explained why in today’s notebook.

Three other relievers (Adam Liberatore, J.P. Howell and Luis Avilan) throw left-handed, and it isn’t often that a team keeps three lefties in a seven-man bullpen. Liberatore and Avilan can both be optioned to the minors. The Marlins have five left-handed hitting position players — more than most teams — so it isn’t inconceivable that Liberatore and Avilan both stay. It just seems unlikely based on precedent.

File all of this under the category of “educated guess.”

Game 16: Clayton Kershaw’s stubbornness comes in handy at a good time.

ATLANTA — Clayton Kershaw didn’t have his best stuff Thursday; he also got thrown out at home plate. But he found a way to push the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory, their second 10-inning win in as many days, thanks in large part to his stubbornness. The box score is here.

The newest Dodger, Luis Avilan, had a horrible spring training — and now he knows why.
