Mat Latos sent to the Dodgers’ bullpen “for right now.”

PHOENIX — Mat Latos was the Dodgers’ emergency long reliever Saturday and will remain in the bullpen “for right now,” manager Don Mattingly said.

“We’ll kind of use him in that situation for right now,” Mattingly said.

The manager wasn’t ready to anoint Mike Bolsinger (or anyone else for that matter) his fifth starter. Bolsinger has had a strong season statistically, but was knocked out in the fourth inning Saturday.

The Dodgers have an off-day Thursday between home games, and can use that day to skip the fifth starter’s turn in the rotation. If they do, that spot would only come up three times the remainder of the season.

Barring injuries, then, the Dodgers’ top four starters are Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Brett Anderson and Alex Wood, and they would line up in some order if the postseason started today.

Mat Latos is healthy again. What’s next for the erstwhile number-five starter?

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Mat Latos threw briefly in the Dodgers’ bullpen prior to tonight’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, two days after he was scratched from a scheduled start in Anaheim with a stiff neck.

“Just wanted to see if anything’s lingering,” Latos said. “Feels good. No issues.”

That doesn’t mean Latos will go back into the Dodgers’ starting rotation. Nor does it mean he’s out.

Game 139: The win meant more to the Angels than the loss did to the Dodgers.

ANAHEIM — The Angels were starting their number one, Garrett Richards, and the Dodgers were starting their number seven (eight?), Joe Wieland. The Giants had lost earlier in the day, while the Angels needed a win just to stay within four games of the second wild-card position in the American League. All things considered, forging a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning before losing 3-2 wasn’t such a tragic outcome — particularly when you consider the Angels had not led the Dodgers after a single inning in their previous eight meetings prior to Wednesday.

The Dodgers are getting a boost from Justin Ruggiano, writes Mark Whicker.

Dodgers scratch Mat Latos from start in Anaheim, Joe Wieland will face Angels.

ANAHEIM — If Mat Latos needed a strong start Wednesday against the Angels to maintain a spot in the Dodgers’ September rotation, his latest injury is a real pain in the neck.

Latos was scratched because of a stiff neck that did not improve overnight, manager Don Mattingly said. Right-hander Joe Wieland will start against the Angels instead.

Will Latos get another chance to start a game for the Dodgers?

We haven’t really gotten too much past this start,” Mattingly said. “We’ve got five guys, I’m thinking Mat’s going to be back. It’s just something that crept up on us. I don’t look at it like he’s totally gone. I think he’ll still be available. We’ll see how things go.”

Mike Bolsinger will start for the Dodgers Friday. Update.

Mat Latos will start for the Dodgers on Thursday in San Diego. And then?

The final three games of the four-game series at Petco Park are still up in the air. One start will probably go to right-hander Mike Bolsinger, who was recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday and hasn’t pitched for the Dodgers since July 29.

Update (11:00 p.m.): Bolsinger will start Friday.

“We’ve been wanting to slip him into the rotation to either move somebody forward or to give someone an extra day, but we haven’t really decided an exact day or anything like that,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “Just if somebody needs a blow, kind of looking at all our guys individually and what’s best for them.”

Bolsinger has taken batting practice with the Dodgers’ starting pitchers. His next start is a question of if, not when. Bolsinger has faced the Padres twice this year. He hurled eight shutout innings at Dodger Stadium in May. In June, he allowed two runs in 4 ⅔ innings.

Bolsinger has a 2.83 ERA in 16 starts for the Dodgers this season.
