PEORIA, Ariz. — Will Ferrell’s entrance into Thursday’s game between the Dodgers and San Diego Padres would have been a spectacle no matter what. When Ferrell cut through the stands wearing a San Francisco Giants uniform — as Yasiel Puig stepped into the batter’s box in the sixth inning — the announced crowd of 10,218 responded with a rousing chorus of boos.

For once, the boos weren’t for Puig. They were for the tall, old guy wearing the uniform of a National League West rival.

In case you’ve managed to ignore the last two days’ worth of baseball news, Ferrell played in five different Cactus League games Thursday. He helicoptered into the Peoria Sports Complex from Camelback Ranch, where he had just strapped on the catcher’s gear for the Giants.

Dodgers spring training 2015: Lineups vs. San Diego Padres.

PEORIA, Ariz. — Will Ferrell is scheduled to pitch an inning for the Dodgers tonight and play an inning in right field for the San Diego Padres. He isn’t in the starting lineup for either team. Right now, he’s playing for the Cubs in Tempe.

It appears that Ferrell will take over for Matt Kemp, who is starting in right field for the Padres.

Update: Ferrell will pitch no earlier than the sixth inning for the Dodgers.

Report: Matt Kemp says the Padres have the best outfield in baseball.

Is Matt Kemp trolling the Dodgers, or just being himself? Or both?

Kemp told MLB.com that the Padres have the best outfield in baseball: “You can write it down — and print it.”

Writes Lyle Spencer:

Judging by the clubhouse crowd gathered around him, with animated conversation flowing around the comparative talents of NBA superstars Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Stephen Curry and LeBron James, Kemp has swiftly won over his new teammates with his vibrant personality.

This is not the Matt Kemp often seen alone with his thoughts the past few years at Dodger Stadium, frustrated by multiple injuries and a shifting role in the midst of an array of outfielders.

This Kemp is fully engaged, eyes alive, sparkling. The best player in the game in 2011, finally healthy and coming off a huge second half last season, he is eager to get started with turning the remodeled Padres into a force in the National League.

Reports: Dodgers will pay $18 million of Matt Kemp’s salary in 2015.

The Dodgers and San Diego Padres are scheduled to play each other 16 times in 2015. If Andrew Friedman handed Matt Kemp an oversized check for $1 million before every game, he would still owe Kemp money at the end of the season.
