Dodgers recall Austin Barnes, option Julio Urias to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers optioned Julio Urias to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday and recalled catcher/infielder Austin Barnes. Barnes is with the team for tonight’s game in St. Louis against the Cardinals.

Urias allowed one run in four innings yesterday against the Washington Nationals, and did not factor into the decision in the Dodgers’ 6-3 win. He’s 1-2 with a 4.69 earned run average in nine major league starts this year.

By rule, the Dodgers aren’t allowed to recall Urias from the minor leagues unless another player is injured. Since the team has placed 22 different players on the disabled list — already matching the most by any National League team in the last 30 years — Urias might well be back soon.

But the Dodgers were attempting to limit Urias’ innings by working him out of the Oklahoma City bullpen when he was summoned for his spot start Thursday. A return to the Triple-A bullpen is likely next.

Sources: Dodgers calling up Andrew Toles, who was out of baseball last year. Update.

A winding baseball journey will come full circle today, as the Dodgers will give Andrew Toles his first taste of the major leagues.

According to multiple sources, the 24-year-old outfielder will be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to tonight’s game against the San Diego Padres. Toles began the season at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, was promoted to Double-A Tulsa in May, and played another eight games at Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to his promotion. Toles’ combined slash line across the three levels: .330/.375/.507, with 23 stolen bases in 32 attempts.

Update (4:00 p.m.): Toles was selected to the 40-man roster and is starting in center field and batting eighth tonight. Carlos Frias was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City and Triple-A infielder Cole Figueroa was designated for assignment.

Brock Stewart will start for the Dodgers on Wednesday.

PITTSBURGH — The Dodgers will recall pitcher Brock Stewart from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start Wednesday’s game in Milwaukee. Stewart, 24, will be making his major league debut.

The promotion will be Stewart’s third in less than three months.

A sixth-round draft pick out of Illinois State University in 2014, Stewart began the season at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. After making two starts in which he allowed only one run, Stewart was promoted to Double-A Tulsa, where he posted a 1.12 ERA in nine starts.

Stewart was 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA in three starts at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Baseball America had this scouting report on Stewart, whose father is a scout for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Dodgers’ Wednesday starter remains to be determined.

PITTSBURGH — The Dodgers still haven’t identified which pitcher will start Wednesday in Milwaukee.

The front-runner would be right-hander Carlos Frias, who is still listed as the starting pitcher for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday, but for a minor procedural problem. He was optioned to Triple-A June 21 and therefore isn’t eligible to be recalled until July 1 per MLB rules. An exception can be made when another player is injured, so any lingering hangnails between now and Wednesday could vault Frias into the Dodgers’ rotation.

Frias has thrown 36 ⅔ innings at Double-A and Triple-A this season since returning from an oblique injury at the start of the season. He has a combined 3.93 ERA across a mix of good and bad outings. The last one was good: 5 ⅓ innings of shutout ball Wednesday in Oklahoma City against Round Rock.

Frias would be pitching with an extra two days’ rest, however. Brock Stewart, who started only the third Triple-A game of his career Friday, is already lined up to start Wednesday on regular rest. The 24-year-old right-hander has performed well at Oklahoma City (six earned runs, 27 strikeouts in 18 ⅔ innings) in a small sample size. Stewart, the Dodgers’ sixth-round pick in 2014 out of Illinois State, began the year at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Dave Roberts didn’t rule out Stewart in his pregame scrum Sunday. He did rule out right-hander Mike Bolsinger, and previously ruled out Hyun-jin Ryu and Brandon McCarthy. Ross Stripling is out; he’ll piggyback off Ryu’s next rehab start for Oklahoma City on Tuesday. So is prospect Jose De Leon, who threw 77 pitches in 3 ⅓ innings Saturday, and Nick Tepesch, who was designated for assignment after his spot start Friday.

Roberts did say the team is looking internally and that a bullpen game is unlikely:
