Why Yasiel Puig is batting leadoff today against the San Diego Padres.

The first time Yasiel Puig was penciled into a major league lineup, he hit leadoff. The last time — before Sunday — was July of last year.

In one sense, it’s a surprise he ever moved from the top of the lineup. For his career Puig has a .467 on-base percentage, with almost as many walks (6) as strikeouts (8), when leading off a game.

Today, Puig will lead off against the San Diego Padres not because he’s hot but because he’s cold. In his last 14 games Puig has a .137/.154/.235 slash line.

SAN DIEGO >> Kenta Maeda and the 2016 Dodgers are making this look easier than it is. Maeda hit a solo home run (video), and so did Yasiel Puig (video), in a 7-0 win over the Padres that gave birth to some rather impressive firsts. The box score is here.

Maeda was anything but boastful in his postgame comments.

Watch: Pitcher Kenta Maeda hits the Dodgers’ first home run of the season.

SAN DIEGO >> Kenta Maeda struck out in his first major league at-bat Wednesday against the Padres. In his second at-bat, he did this.

The home run traveled an estimated 352 feet (358 per MLB’s Statcast tool), and it established a couple firsts. It was the first hit of Maeda’s major league career and, remarkably, the first home run by any player on either team in the series.

The San Diego Padres still haven’t scored this season through four innings of their third game.
