Will Ferrell Dodgers

Got a text from a scout this morning wondering who the Dodgers’ closer will be until Jansen returns. Statistically speaking, I’d have to go with the Ferrell kid.

With a couple exceptions the Dodgers are enjoying a day off today — the only day off on their Cactus League schedule. Brett Anderson is starting a Triple-A game on a back field at Camelback Ranch. If you’re in the area, the game is free to attend, though seating is typically limited to standing room only. Chad Gaudin is throwing a bullpen session, his first time off a mound since he felt a “tweak” in his right biceps Saturday.

Here are a few things I’ve been reading this morning:

Dodgers pitcher Chad Gaudin connects Tom Verducci to Will Ferrell.

PEORIA, Ariz. — In March 2005, Sports Illustrated senior writer Tom Verducci embedded himself in the Toronto Blue Jays’ spring camp for the entertainment and enlightenment of his readers. On his fifth day, Verducci got a uniform and and a position and a turn at-bat in an intrasquad game. You can read the story Verducci wrote here.

Yesterday, actor/comedian Will Ferrell took part in five different games in one day for the entertainment of HBO viewers. At some point MLB will auction Ferrell’s game-worn memorabilia on its website, with proceeds going to benefit cancer research. You can read all about Ferrell’s adventure with the Dodgers here.

One man had a front-row seat to both events: Dodgers pitcher Chad Gaudin.

PEORIA, Ariz. — Will Ferrell pitched for the Dodgers today.

I already wrote about that here, but the sentence bears repeating. It’s not every day I get to write that.

Still, lest we forget, Garth Brooks got a total of 46 at-bats in spring training for the Padres (1998/99), Mets (2000) and Royals (2004). Kevin Costner went 0-for-3, scored a run and committed an error in a 2002 game for the San Bernardino Stampede against the Seattle Mariners. Billy Crystal batted leadoff for the Yankees in a 2008 spring game (against Paul Maholm). Tom Selleck got one spring at-bat in 1991 for the Tigers as he prepared for his role in Mr. Baseball. And Chad Gaudin pitched to Tom Verducci once. I talked to Gaudin about that after the game. I’ll share his thoughts here tomorrow.

Here’s what else happened today:
